1900 [August 7] -- Nuku'alofa to Dubrovnik,
Dalmatia -- Magnificent Registered cover franked by
copies of SG2b, 25,38 & 45 each tied by "Nuku'alofa 7 AU 00 Tonga" CDS as
of 1897. By order of the postmaster of Tonga, all prior issues were
withdrawn from circulation & could not be used for Postal purposes. Front
also shows New York Registry Label along with a violet Tonga registered
handstamp. The reverse shows NY [9/28, S.F. [9/21] & Dubrovnik Dec. 1900
transit and arrival markings. An extraordinary and undoubtedly unique
combination of Registry marking & label on the same cover --
a Showpiece !!! |
